Item Description
An Early 19th Century English Oak Dumb Waiter or WhatNot.
Derived from the French étagère this is essentially a pair of standing shelves. Constructed in oak with fabulous figure and colour. The well chosen timber is probably pollard oak, a timber that was particularly popular amongst the leading makers in England in the early 19th century. Each tier has a deep tray moulding to three edges, the top has shaped and moulded central decorative elements which act as caps to the end supports. At their bases, the end supports terminate in short platforms with carved ornament and reeded bun feet. It has obvious similarities with certain Gillows pieces and, given its quality, it is possible that it was made in their workshops.
