Item Description
A Matched Pair of 18th Century French Painted Armchairs with Original Tapestry Upholstery with Animal Themes
These lovely armchairs retain their original blue and cream paint scheme and the original tapestry upholstery. The tapestry was probably made by one of the Aubusson workshops and consists of a pair of bird subjects on the backs; woodpeckers on one and swans or geese on the other. On the seat panels are a wolf on one and a fascinating image of an animal in human clothing on the other. The tapestry survives in sound condition.
The frames of the chairs, with their mellow and attractive paint schemes, have bowed front rails and stylised backs in the classic Louis XVI manner.
Finding tapestry upholstery of this sort in such fine condition is very unusual and we also have a settee of associated pattern, also with its fine original tapestry, that would make a wonderful matched set. (See #3670)
