Item Description
'Shabani - Gorilla in Thought’ is a monumental sculptural artwork created by the renowned English artist Dominic Hurley.
Hewn from a five tonne solid block of the famous Kilkenny Black Marble, shipped across St George's channel to Dominic's rural Devon workshops.
Standing at just under 5' tall, this fascinating homage to such a mighty Silverback was sculpted after Dominic's extensive study of the physiology and movement of Shabani. Then followed more than a thousand hours of stone carving - traditionally freehand as is Dominic's preference.
The texture of the fur is alive where contrasting shadows demonstrate the skill of the artisan. Colour to the face is a wholly natural result of fine hand polishing, and demonstrates why the choice of the Kilkenny stone was such a wise option.
Crafted to last for centuries this magnificent statue is available for the first time. It is a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork, and a fine investment for any discerning collector or institution.
