Item Description
The Giant Clam is the largest living bivalve mollusc. They inhabit shallow coral reefs, off of the South Pacific and Indian oceans. They can measure in excess of 100cm across, and are known to have an average lifespan of 100 years or more
Clams were known to indigenous peoples of East Asia for thousands of years and the Venetian scholar and explorer Antonio Pigafetta documented them in a journal as early as 1521
Often used in religious ceremonies and to store valuable items.
