Item Description

An original Schools Print Ltd. poster illustrated by Michael Rothenstein (1908–1993) entitled 'Tree Felling in Essex'. It features a charming scene of workmen busily cutting up tree trunks with the help of a couple of steam engines. Good composition with an attractive limited colour palette. Framed and ready to hang. (UK shipping £30)

The Schools Print company was established by Derek and Brenda Rawnsley in the 1930s. After Derek's death in 1943, his wife carried on the company. Immediately after the Second World War she commissioned 24 leading British artists to create a series of lithographs which were to be sold (by subscription) to primary schools with the intention of giving children an understanding of contemporary art. The auto-lithographs were drawn directly onto stone or zinc plates by the artists themselves, and for reasons of economy they were limted to six colours. Each print had a decorative border to act as a 'frame' when pinned to the classroom wall. They were printed by Thomas Griffits at the Baynard Press.
