Item Description
An Elizabeth II Modernist sterling silver paperknife by George Grant MacDonald - London 1971. Fully marked to the terminal edge.
The paper knife is of angular trapezoid form, the outer sections of the handle with granular textured decoration ‘electro-texturing'. This early example has been left with the original patina.
George Grant Macdonald graduated as a silversmith in 1969 after completing his training at the Central School of Art and the Sir John Cass College. He established a workshop in Clerkenwell, specifically concentrating on the development of new techniques in texture and finish. It was here in the early 1970's that he pioneered a process of electro-texturing like that of the paper knife - a method of electroplating under controlled conditions to produce various types of texture and nodulant surfaces, relating to the form of the underlying metal.
Macdonald went on to purchase Gerald Benny's workshop on Bear Lane, Southwark in 1979. His now established London based studio is world-renowned for its high quality designs. He holds a Royal Warrant from the Prince of Wales for his work.
The paper knife has a tactile feel and is in good condition. There are a few marks consistent with use as expected, mainly to the top point of the knife.
