Pair Of Iconic 1970S Peter Ghyczy Garden Orange Egg Chairs

A superb pair of Peter Ghyczy Garden Orange Egg Chairs Circa late 1960s/early 1970s.

The egg chairs with a space age, UFO-like form, in brightly coloured orange finish and black cloth seating. They have been resprayed to their original colour, and look glorious. The seating has the original black cloth upholstery, and is still very comfortable and in good clean condition.

Designed for outdoor and indoor use. The lids open and close perfectly and have no damage. Two screws holding the lid to the main frame on one chair have been replaced. There are some very minor imperfections to the sprayed finished in a few places. These have been difficult to try and photograph.

These original iconic egg chairs were only manufactured from 1968 to the around the mid 1970s.

The Garden Egg chair was designed by the Hungarian émigré Peter Ghyczy in 1968, who started his working career as chief designer for the Polyurethane factory 'Elastogran GmbH' in Lemförde, West Germany. The license to produce the chair was sold to the VEB Synthesewerk Schwarzheide close to the city of Senftenberg. The latter gives the chair its other name, the 'Senftenberg Egg'. Officially, one third of their production was for the West German market, the rest for East Germany and for export.
The production was halted in 1975, and the chair became an iconic 'East' German product, due to its popularity in trade shows and exhibitions.
