Item Description

'Sandringham Workshop' walnut and fruitwood inlaid and carved rectangular side table. Circa 1920. The under tier stamped with a Crown and a double 'A' cipher for Queen Alexandra.

The table was made at the Sandringham workshops, established by Princess Alexandra, later Queen Alexandra, following her marriage in 1863 to Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII (d.1910). Originally established as a 'Technical School of Woodwork' for the children of the Estate workers, it later became Her Majesty Queen Mary's 'Carving School' for ex-servicemen and local workers. The pieces made were retailed at Sandringham, and London Department Stores, and shown at the Ideal Home Exhibitions.

A circa 1920 'Sandringham Workshop' mahogany and fruitwood inlaid fruit stand table sold at Christie's, London on 14th June 2006, for £4,600.

This table is of very good quality and made out of solid walnut, with the top having inlaid marquetry in fruitwood. The frieze has carved decoration, and the table terminates on turned legs with the original brass and porcelain castors. The table has no loose joints and is free from any woodworm.

The table is in good original condition and has been waxed. There are some marks related to its age. The top has some light surface dents and marks with use. The tier has a mark and there are a few knocks to the back edge to note.
