Item Description
An Eva easy chair by Swedish architect and designer Bruno Mathsson for Karl Mathsson. Circa 1940. Labelled.
The chair is made from laminated birch plywood and solid birch. It has the original finish, which has been waxed. There are some light water marks and light scuff marks around the frame. The chair is structurally very sound. The webbing has been replaced at some point in the past, this shows a few light marks.
Mathsson exhibited a collection of bentwood furniture in 1937 at the 'Exposition International' in Paris, and also in 1939 at the World Exhibition in New York, and at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco. His Eva Chair (then called Work Chair) was purchased for the public spaces of the soon-to-be-opened Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. In 1939, he exhibited at the New York World’s Fair, cementing his popularity in the U.S.
