Item Description
A George II shagreen knife box of bow fronted form, with brass clasp, feet and handle. The interior fitted in red velvet. Circa 1740-1760.
The knife box became a symbol of importance in early dining rooms, since owning silver, including knives, was a matter of great prestige.
There are some signs of use, expected with an item of this age, but overall a good example. Please refer to the photographs.
There is a key present, but it no longer works the lock, and the casing is slightly out of shape to fit properly. One of the brass bun feet at the back has been replaced at some time in the past.
Additional dimensions information:
The back two rows with take knifes up to 20cm, with the rest 16cm high.
