Item Description
A fabulous pair of vintage Washington table lamps, designed in 1983 by the French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte for the Lumen Center Italia. Circa 1980's.
Originally designed for the French embassy in Washington DC. These are early examples.
Memphis Group in style, the lamps have geometric elements, and stand on semi circular disc feet, with weighted cylindrical bodies. A small sphere separates the large removable reflector shade that rotates fully 360 degrees. The whole is matt black lacquered finish on steel and brass. The shades can be lifted off the bases.
Each lamp weighs 8.7kg and they are 12 volts with a transformer. They have been tested by an electrician and are in working order, and have had two pin Euro plugs re-fitted. Each cable length is 170cm.
Jean-Michel Wilmotte is a French architect and designer. He was born in 1945 in Soissons and founded his architectural practice, Wilmotte & Associates, in Paris in 1975. His work ranges from interior design and architecture to urbanism and industrial design.
Condition report:
There are signs of use to the finish in places and some scuff marks and light nicks.
Notably one of the reflector shades is slightly out of shape near the sphere, which also has a very small split to one side. This is barely noticeable. Photographs 8, 9, 10 & 11 show this shade.
There are two more scuff marks to the back of one cylindrical base (Photographs 14&15).
It appears that the angle of the shades are of a slightly lower angle than originally designed.
