In the 1820’s James Shoolbred started his company in London. James Shoolbred & Co sold textiles, carpets and other items for interior decorating. In the 1870’s the company was designing and producing original, high-quality furniture, inspired by the aesthetic qualities of E.W. Godwin’s architecture. The furniture was sold in-store and also featured in the James Shoolbred & Co catalogue, which was circulated outside of London. Within another decade the company expanded and moved into a larger location in London, becoming one of the first department stores. James Shoolbred furniture was always displayed and photographed alongside the textiles, carpets and lamps that the company also sold, creating an example interior design for customers to view.
