Item Description

A fine pair of First World War era leather field cavalry boots and trees made for the Marquis of Blandford, later the 10th Duke of Marlborough, John Spencer Churchill (1897-1972).

These boots, made by Bartley and Sons of Oxford Street, would have been worn by the young Marquis during his time as a lieutenant-colonel in the Life Guards.
He served with distinction in France and Belgium during the First War.

Having inherited the dukedom in 1934, he would also serve as military liaison officer with the United States forces in Britain during WWII.

In 1950, the Duke opened the grounds and many rooms of Blenheim Palace (including the bedroom in which Sir Winston Churchill was born) to the public.
