Item Description
Early 20th century French margin mirror with carved wood gilt frames and decoration. The inner and outer frames are decorated in the "baguette de berain" style with raised, curled acanthus leaves, shells and flowers on a criss-cross cut background. At each lower corner, linking the two frames, a beautiful openwork carving of curled stems and leaves each side of a central roundel with pierced decoration fits over the joins in the glass and at the upper corners there is a more flowing, open design of stems and pierced curled leaves. The cartouche has a central leaf design with pierced decoration flowing out from each side ending with little floral and foliate curls at the edge of each corner. The original glass is in good condition with just a little, very light, age in the bevelled, central glass which gives an excellent reflection. A stamp on the back shows the mirror was originally supplied from L Preaubert in Nantes and we bought this mirror at auction in Nantes and this, plus it's lovely condition, suggests it has hung in the same home since it was first purchased.
