Item Description

An early 19th century French gilt wood marriage mirror. These iconic little mirrors were often placed within the marriage chest as part of a collection of useful, significant items a young married couple could use and treasure for a lifetime. The original mirror plate is set within a plain gilt wood frame surmounted with a decorative crest of gilded laurel leaves together with a tied wheatsheaf below to represent fertility and life. The gilding is bright and plentiful but has rubbed and faded a little over the past two centuries revealing the warm terracotta coloured basecoat beneath only enhancing its history and character.
Gilded marriage mirror circa 1820.
