Item Description
Antique turned wood treen egg, made from olive wood, expertly turned incorporating a thread which opens up in two sections to reveal a storage container inside.
Hand-painted front depicting a cockerel in a rural landscape protecting a nest of eggs.
On the reverse 'Menton' is written in elaborate calligraphy presumably denoting this was a a souvenir piece from Menton in France which is on the French Riviera near Monaco.
Probably dating from the mid-late 19th Century c. 1880.
At some point in its life, it has been paired with a Scottish glazed pottery stand which is also antique and works well to display the piece. The stand is included with the egg.
The egg is in great vintage condition with only minor wear commensurate with age. The pottery stand has an area of restoration on one side but this can be placed at the back.
The egg itself measures 19cm high x 11cm in diameter. When stood on the stand the total height is 24cm.
