ANTIQUE WASH STAND
A hugely decorative and good-quality washstand on a larger-than-average scale with three drawers over two pedestals containing cupboards, a Carrara marble top and a tiled back.
Made from a mixture of different woods and inlaid with marquetry decoration typical of the style.
In the Gothic Revival Taste with nods to the Aesthetic Movement.
The seven individual hand-painted tiles depict stylised images of British garden birds amongst the foliage.
Original turned handles throughout.
Dating from somewhere between 1860 and 1880.
Brass makers label for ‘Collier & Plucknett, Cabinetmakers, and Upholsterers, Warwick & Leamington’.
Collier and Plucknett were best known for their Gothic revival furniture in the Victorian period. Perhaps their best-known commission was for the furniture for Tyntesfield country house in Somerset where they created some very impressive furniture and fittings still present today including a grand bedroom suite featuring a similar washstand to this (Now in the National Trust collection). Another similar Collier & Plucknett bedroom suite, Lot 58 at The Contents of Berwick Hall sale sold under the hammer with Dreweatts in 2021 for £48,000.
The washstand is largely in good order. It is solid and sturdy, the drawers run smoothly and it is a very usable piece of furniture. There is wear throughout consistent with age and use, mainly on each side. There is an old repair to the wooden back of the tiled section. The marble is from any significant damage or repairs but also has some wear including very small dings and a small hairline crack to one edge.
Approximate measurements 123cm wide x 61cm deep x 100.5cm high.
