Item Description
Antique original pencil drawing The 'Jacobus' statue by Bertel Thorvaldsen.
A skilfully executed and dramatic study of the original and famous statue in the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen. Thorvaldsen was commissioned to sculpt Christ and the apostles from Carrara marble in 1833.
Signed ’Kittendorff’ verso and dated and dated ‘Jannar Quartae (January 4th) 1876’. It is also inscribed ‘Jacob’ which relates to the apostle statue known as either Jacobus or James.
Johan Adolf Kittendorff (1820-1902) was a well-renowned draughtsman, painter and pioneer printmaker from Copenhagen. Towards the end of his life, he was made a Knight of Dannebrog.
The drawing is largely in good vintage order. There is some wear throughout but mainly around the edges. A lot of this would be hidden once framed up.
Overall measurements: 50cm x 35cm.
