Item Description
Large early to Mid Century Persian Jajim in a striking, modernist two tone design. 150cm x 240cm (94.4 inches x 59 inches)
With a superb, bold and graphic design that is tremendously well suited to a modern (or mid century modern) interior. Originally deep black, the colour has faded now to a mellow dark brown/black against the warm cream ground.
These ancient textiles were not made purely as rugs, in the sense we understand it today. Made from long strips of coarse wool and sewn together, they have traditionally served many purposes, most frequently as bed covers. Often a family would place a charcoal brazier in the centre of a jajim and all sit around it, or they were spread on the ground and slept on. Thicker jajims were employed as horse covers, while thinner jajims (like this example) were frequently used for decoration and have been prized as luxury items in Iran for centuries.
This can be used as a rug, a tablecloth, sofa throw, wall hanging etc. As versatile as it is decorative.
No condition issues to speak of. The textile is clean, intact and without losses. There are a few small particles of dried grass etc embedded into the weave, serving to remind this was a practical furnishing for a nomadic family.
