Item Description
This midcentury oil painting on canvas by French painter Albert Charles Dequene (1897–1973) captures lush trees and flowering bushes in a striking palette of deep burgundy, light purple, yellow, and cool greens. The dynamic composition closely crops within the flowers, flattening perspective and turning floral shapes into decorative patterns. Light brushstrokes convey the movement of nature while contrasting the forms of different species, from the large petals of the tree aeonium to dense clusters of daisies. This lush tropical landscape is mounted in an elegant antique Montparnasse frame. It is signed, dated 1954, and inscribed "Tana."
Born and trained in Lille under Pharaon de Winter and Fernand Cormon, Dequene traveled extensively to Tahiti, Morocco, and Madagascar, likely depicting Antananarivo in this work. He applied the same masterful attention to colour across landscapes, streetscapes, and portraits.
