Item Description
This rare early 20th-century French stone sculpture is crafted as a bas-relief, with a flat surface from which emerges the face of a young boy. The gentle features of his restful face recall the still portraits of the 16th century that define elegantly the profile of the sitter. This portrait is adorned with distinctive details, such as the subtle patterns of the headpiece and the ribbon flowing behind the head.
With three flat finished sides, this bas-relief is full of expressive textures that contrast with the gentle carving of the face, from the natural holes in the stone to the rugged top. This moving work makes a wonderful statement piece, displayed on a hall table or a large shelf.
Condition: Some losses to the sides, as pictured.
