Item Description

A rare 17th-century French faience altar vase from Nevers, with a decor ‘a ‘compendiario’. It showcases a large yellow and orange tulip in black lines, alongside abstract blue foliage. This vase stands on a filleted foot with a pear-shaped body and is finished with a thin neck and a larger mouth. It also features two handles in the shape of lions.

Decors ‘a compendiario’ came from Faienza in Italy and were popularised in 17th-century France by Nevers. They designate an often simple figure in yellow, orange and blue on a thick white glaze that highlights the elaborate and sculptural shape of a ceramic object. Churches were influential clients at Nevers and this altar vase was used to hold flowers. A rare and stunning piece of early pottery.
