Item Description

This rare late 17th-century French faience charger comes from the renowned Conrade workshop in Nevers. Decorated in an exquisite camaïeu of blue and white, it depicts a shepherd resting under a tree, a shepherdess with a staff, a dog, and a sheep. This harmonious scene unfolds across a pastoral landscape of rolling hills, dotted with trees, lush bushes, and a distant village. The wide lip is richly decorated with a lively bestiary of birds, rabbits, and butterflies, interwoven with abundant fruits and urns of foliage, evoking the style of Albisola maiolica.

Large chargers like this adorned the dressers of princely courts in Italy, a tradition introduced to Nevers by Italian potters. By the late 17th century, Nevers had developed a distinctly French style, characterised by idyllic countryside scenes inspired by the popular pastoral novel L’Astrée, executed with graceful, refined brushwork. Well-preserved and rarely available, this charger is a remarkable example of Nevers’ finest period, combining artistic elegance with historical significance.
