Item Description

Impressive American Folk Art Chest. Original untouched worn Scumble Painted finish. The most impressive, understated repeat pattern Burl Wood finish. Faux trompe d'oiel Panels. Authentic wear to the feet and corners of the lid. The reverse painted inscription O. F. Mason Muir Michigan Via Detroit Along with the date 1862 Clean interior with candle box. The Village of Muir (formerly Montrose) was establsihed on cleared lands in 1856, by Blanchard and Blanchard, this was subsequently purchased by a group of land bankers lead by A. L. Soule, with the aim of establishing a Saw Mill on the river and with the extention West of the Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad, encouraged H K Muir, the Superintendent of the Detroit and Milwaukee railway to pass the railway through the village. He was successful and due to another postal village called Montrose in the state the name was changed to Muir in honor of H.K. in 1860. This trunk (or its Maker or owner) was either produced or travelled to Muir as a result of the Railway arriving.
