Item Description

Early 20th Century hand carved Kashmiri royal cavalry cigar box

A rare survivor from the 1st world war in the form of a hand carved Kashmiri cigar box. Covered in ornate relief floral design with its original stamp at its base. The inside of the box is hand carved and inscribed with royal crest detailing G.K.G.O light cavalry. This item is likely to have been made specifically as a gift for the departing soldiers of King George’s own light cavalry from comrades in India (Kashmir). A rare thing and in overall good condition considering its age and use.

Raised by Sir John Gordon, Bart, as the 4th Regiment of Nizam Cavalry in 1826 and became the 4th Cavalry, Hyderabad contingent in the mid to late 19th Century. Lead by Sikhs in the north of India in the early 20th Century. They moved around India including Uttar Pradesh and Kashmir.
