Mid 19th Century Hand Carved Memento Mori Figure
An amazing example of a mid 19th Century hand carved wooden memento mori figure. The detail on this figure is exceptional to say the least, detailing the face, feet, decayed skin and surface paint which has aged away naturally as shown. This item comes in a bespoke wooden case with velour backing. Signed on the reverse M. Shanoghe.
Memento mori is an artistic or symbolic trope acting as a reminder of the inevitability of death. The concept has its roots in the philosophers of classical antiquity and Christianity, and appeared in funerary art and architecture from the medieval period onwards
