Item Description

A life size carved pitch pine cigar/tobacconist trade sign/point of sale in the form of an Indian. Often placed outside of a shop, the cigar store Indian became less common in the 20th century for a variety of reasons. Sidewalk-obstruction laws dating as far back as 1911 were one cause with the more modern health issues condemning there demand.

Of typical form, gazing into the distance, with the other hand holding a barrel of cigar. Heavy wear all round, with losses to the base, his right hand, feather head dress and a few other small areas of damage from the elements. Yet the piece is very much stable and sturdy, and has been mounted on a large steel stand for display. Remnants of its original polychromed decoration are visible, a highly decorative and rare piece.

Late 19th century in age, American in origins

202cm in height
