Developed in the early part of the 40s A countryman character, singing comic songs in dialect, was another typical act in puppet shows of the time. William's first outings were solo performances of 'Nowt about Owt', popularised by Gracie Fields, and 'the Fly be on the Turmut'. He sang': 'T'were on a jolly zummer's day the twenty fust of May, John Scriggins took his turmut hoe and with this he trudged away...'.

John was a fine wood carver and his wife Eva costumed the puppets, performed from the 1930s into the early 70's by John, Eva and their four children Marjorie, Nancy, Barbara and John (Junior)

The puppets are not strung to be used, only for decorative purposes. Age related wear, fading and deterioration to the costumes, elderly repairs but complete (one lead foot missing from a turnips) with their original paint, carved pine bodies and cast lead feet.
