Item Description
A rare survivor, fantastically decorative pair of plaster and hand painted animal cart panels used by the Ringling Brothers Circus Show circa 1900
The two panels would have hung over the cages of the carts to conceal the lions and tigers as they were wheeled in to the show. The faux wooden cages with hand painted plaster reliefs of a Tiger & Lion very much in the manner of George Stubbs
The panels come with provenance, an original cheque of purchase and other paper ephemera
Some minor elderly repairs and cracking to the plaster work, paint loss and abrasions but all general age related wear.
The cast animals are a mixture of plaster and what appears to be horse hair or a hessian, this giving the material strength and flexibility.
