Item Description
A wonderful oil on panel of a cantaloupe melon and grapes by the Scottish Artist John Robertson Reid.
It is housed behind glass and in its original gilt frame, the frame makers label is CHAS.H.WEST, 117 Finchley Road NW, (Charles Henry West, London, Picture frame maker and artists' colourman)
The painting is signed in the front left corner and on the back of the panel Reid has written ‘’Cantaloupe and grapes’’ By John R Reid, Dated 1914, then ‘’The first fruit ever painted by me!’’
Reid was born in Edinburgh (1851 – 1926) he painted in Surrey and from the 1880’s in Cornwall, in later life he also painted with the young Winston Churchill. His pictures can be found in the Tate, V&A and Russell-Cotes Museum. He exhibited at the RA from 1877 – 1925.
Provenance – Reid was friends of the Dunbar family , who’s daughter Evelyn became the 1st female 2nd World War Artist, then by decent.
