Item Description
This is an exceptional and rare antique Spanish santo of Madonna and Child that was discovered recently in Sevilla. It dates from the 19th century and it is entirely hand carved from wood, except the glass eyes. Created with a masterful craftsmanship and artistic quality this representation of Mother and Child is exquisite in its graceful beauty that is in my opinion truly remarkable. In the past such devotional statues would grace private altars as well as be placed in closed alcoves on exterior facades. This can be seen even today all over Spain and Italy. The santo measures about 80 x 30 x 25 cm or approximately 31.4 x 11.8 x 9.8 inches and it is in great antique condition with minor signs of ageing [the child's little finger is missing].
