Item Description
This is a handsome and a truly exceptional antique Italian bronze statue of Mercury that was discovered during my latest trip to Florence. Dating from the 19th century this sculpture was created after the original by the famous artist Giambologna [1529 – 1608] who was the last significant Italian Renaissance sculptor working most of his life in Florence. Giambologna's Mercury gained such fame that smaller sculptures such as this one were created in particular during the "Grand Tour" of Europe. This statue is of exceptional beauty and allure, created masterfully from bronze that is mounted on a stunning green marble base. It measures about 54 x 20 x 13 cm or approximately 21.2 x 7.8 x 5.1 inches and it is in great antique condition considering its age. It is exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!
Mercury is a major god in Roman mythology. He is the god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence, communication, travelers, luck... He also serves as the guide of souls to the underworld and is known as the "messenger of the gods", hence being represented with wings on his helmet as well as on his feet. He is often depicted holding the caduceus in his left hand. Similar to the Greek god Hermes, who was awarded a magic wand by Apollo. The wand turned later into the caduceus, the staff representitive of the healing arts, with its intertwined serpents.
