Item Description

This is a glorious and extremely rare large antique Flemish tapestry that dates from the 17th century, depicting the goddess Juno in a peacock chariot. In the past, mythology played a significant part in inspiring artisans and craftsmen of decorative items to create such impressive treasures as this remarkable tapestry or wall hanging.

Juno was an ancient Roman goddess equivalent to Hera, queen of the gods in Greek mythology and the goddess of love and marriage. A daughter of Saturn, she was the sister and wife of Jupiter and the mother of Mars. Her sacred animal was the peacock. As the patron goddess of Rome and the Roman Empire, Juno was called Regina ["Queen"] and often depicted wearing a diadem or crown.

The tapestry measures about 230 x 200 cm or approximately 90.5 x 78.7 inches and it is in lovely timeworn antique condition with signs of ageing that are expected with items of this age. Please bear in mind that it is about 400 years old. The tapestry is lined on its back with metal rings attached for hanging. It is exactly as I discovered it in the South of France. For the full condition please refer to the images!
