Item Description

This is a pair of opulent and rare antique Italian altar urns that date from the earlier part of the 18th century. They are hand carved from wood and gilded in a stunning combination of gold and silver that gives them such a mesmerising presence. These urns are a great example of the Baroque period which is known for its richness in form and finishes. Such decorative objects adorned altars of Italian churches as well as private chapels in the past and would often be displayed holding a palm branch or floral arangements made of metal, paper or other materials. In Italy they are often refered as "porta palma" or "palm holders". They were also sometimes used as candleholders. Each urn measures about 34 x 27.5 x 10 cm or approximately 13.3 x 10.8 x 3.9 inches and they are in lovely antique condition - considering their age - with signs of ageing mainly seen in a gorgeous patina created by the passage of time. They are exactly as I discovered them in January of 2025 in Tuscany. For the full condition please refer to the images!
