Item Description

A late 18th century neoclassical white statuary marble tablet depicting the marriage of Cupid and Psyche, after the study by Giovanni Battista Cipriani and further after the antique by Tryphon.

This exquisite marble tablet is carved with a procession of five cherubs. Cupid, the ancient Roman God of Love, holds a dove and is veiled alongside Psyche, Goddess of the Soul. Hymen, the God of Marriage, follows, holding a basket of fruit, while two further winged cherubs lead the way.

Once used as a neoclassical chimneypiece tablet, this depiction of Cupid and Psyche’s marriage is captured in various prints in the British Museum. These are after a study by Italian painter and engraver Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727-1785) which is further after an onyx cameo by Tryphon. It is a stunning example of late 18th century neoclassical works, the statuary marble of beautiful quality after more than 240 years.
