Item Description
An antique 19th century carved marble circular plaque depicting a philosopher.
This Italian sculpture is expertly carved in white statuary marble showcasing a Grand Tour style.
A skeleton head is peaking up behind the philosopher, thought to be Socrates, who said that the proper practice of philosophy is “about nothing else but dying and being dead.”
The theory of Memento Mori, meaning 'remember you will die', is the ancient practice of reflection on our mortality that goes back to the renowned philopsher. The skull symbols are often seen acting as a reminder of this.
The impressive scale and hanging hooks only add to this charming yet intriguing decorative sculpture in any period property looking to add a piece with deeper meaning.
