Item Description
A superb and competently carved early 19th century cherub seated upon a stylised dolphin. Crafted in beech wood, this neoclassical sculpture depicts a detailed cherub or putto holding a conch shell in one hand and a later trident in the other.
Aside from it expertly captured subject, this carved sculpture can be celebrated for its sense of movement. The cherub’s arm is raised as if riding the dolphin, its tail extending up and behind the infant putto as if in motion, travelling across the seabed.
This wooden sculpture is a good scale for interior display, making a stunning decorative feature of a sideboard or plinth. More than 220 years of age has instilled the wood with an old-aged patina, adding to its character and unique history.
Provenance: Ossowski, Pimlico Road, London.
CONDITION REPORT
