Item Description
A Victorian Auguste Moreau statue of a putto-style infant in marble dating from the 1890s. While 19th century French sculptor Auguste Moreau is best known for his bronze-cast figurines, his marble carvings are a rare find. Signed by the artist and inscribed with ‘De Faise Le Sculpture L’Art 38’ to the back, this marble statue depicts a nude child in exceptional detail sat on a flowering pedestal. At over 130 years old, this Auguste Moreau statue is a beautiful interior piece for display on a column or centre table in a traditional townhouse or impressive hallway.
Born in Dijon, French sculptor Auguste Moreau (1834-1917) was the youngest son of sculptor and painter, Jean-Baptiste Moreau. Together with his brothers, Hippolyte and Marthurin, Auguste studied under their father, learning the beauty and quality that their work is renowned for. In 1861, Auguste first exhibited at the Salon in Paris and continued to do so until his later years, celebrated for his realistic and graceful sculptures. To this very day, Moreau’s work is highly regarded and can be found in exhibitions and galleries worldwide.
