Item Description

An antique carved marble bust of Madame Récamier, after the antique by Joseph Chinard (1756-1813).

 

Dressed with a bandeau, her right hand clutches drapery around her chest while she sits on an integral square base.


Dating to circa 1850, this French sculpture is of an impressive life size scale. At over 150 years old, it has truly stood the test of time with crisp white finish and fine quality.

A perfect piece for an interior or exterior display in any period property looking to elegance and style.

 

This sculpture is unsigned and not dated.


Madame Récamier


Madame Récamier, wife of a wealthy older banker, became a prominent figure in Parisian political and literary circles.

The original of this neoclassical sculpture celebrated the beauty of this renowned figure and now resides in Lyon.

This marble copy showcases the details and sensual allure of the original.

Joseph Chinard (1756-1813)

Chinard was one of the leading portrait artists of his day.

 

At just 16 years old he was commissioned to restore the facade of the Hotel de Ville.

Later making several marble copies from the antique of Madame Récamier and other sculptures during his travels across Europe.

However, his life later took a turn when he was imprisoned in the Castel S Angelo for anti-religious acts in 1792.

Released after two months, Chinard returned to Lyon where he spent most of the rest of his life, visiting Italy and Paris a number of times where he exhibited his work to great acclaim.

CONDITION REPORT

Good structural condition. Some scuffs and scratches. Minor areas of rubbing and dirt build up. Possible restoration to the nose area. Restoration to the finger.
