Item Description
A well-modelled, mid 19th century statuary white marble bust of Dante Alighieri, famed late 13th to early 14th century Italian philosopher, writer and poet.
Originating from Italy, this impressive marble bust depicts Dante as he is often portrayed in artistic works, wearing a cloak to his shoulders and cap to his head. It is decorated with a laurel wreath, symbolising his prominent status as a poet. The bust has been exceptionally carved by an Italian artisan into the finest marble, the face captured particularly well with details of the cheek bones, nose and temple still sharply defined after more than 170 years.
Elevated by a socle base, this antique Italian bust is a spectacular decorative piece for an interior, looking striking displayed on a column or pedestal where the bust’s quality can be observed from every angle.
DANTE
Dante Alighieri was an Italian writer and a very important figure of the Renaissance period.
Though he died in 1321, Dante’s works have lived on throughout the centuries, his epic poem ‘La Commedia’ (also known as ‘The Divine Comedy’) considered one of the world’s greatest works of literature. It was the first that influenced the Renaissance and the first work with a personal interpretation since the fall of Rome.
