Item Description

A Jackfield encaustic tile of a right hand pointing, salvaged from an ex UK collection.

This charming tile is decorated with a Victorian style pointing finger in a timeworn cream colour over a sleek black background.

Dating to the late 20th century, this tile would make a unique decorative piece in modern and traditional properties alike. Perhaps directing guests to certain rooms or entranceways.

A maker’s mark for Encaustic Tile Co. Jackfield can be seen on the reverse side.

Encaustic Tile Co. Jackfield

Tiles marked ‘Encaustic Tile Co. Jackfield’ such as this one are from the renowned Craven Dunnill & Co. Ltd, which was founded by Henry Powell Dunnill in Jackfield, Shropshire, in 1872.

Craven Dunnill became popular for its ceramic floor and wall tiles, particularly encaustic floor tiles such as this one.

Now at two factories, the main factory is located at its original site the Jackfield Tile Works in Ironbridge, Shropshire.

As the oldest surviving purpose built tile factory in the world, this factory is part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, known as a world heritage site at the heart of Britain’s industrial revolution.

In 2000, business started up again at the original Craven Dunnill site and the company continues today.
