Item Description
A large antique John Bolding Carrara marble corner basin with porcelain sink. Dating between circa 1890 to 1910 and twice the standard size, this sink is a Trone model, and incorporates Victorian and Edwardian styles. This sink would make a lovely addition to a larger bathroom in a grand country home or townhouse.
John Bolding
John Bolding and Sons was established in 1822 by John Bolding. It began as a brass foundry merchants, but by 1871 the firm had evolved into the sanitary world.
It began to develop an interest for “improvements in water closets and in valves and regulating apparatus for the same” as quoted in the London Gazette in 1871.
Their David Street showroom displayed modern bathroom units as oppose to the previous Victorian style. In 1963, the Bolding company managed to buy their competitor, Thomas Crapper & Co.
However this ultimately fell through and the Bolding company became obsolete and Crapper’s business is still producing bathroom fittings to this day.
Additional information:
The overall dimensions are measured from front to back and the maximum width across when the sink is mounted on a corner.
CONDITION REPORT
Good structural condition. Original fittings and taps. The taps turn but may benefit from refurbishment. The hot tap is fairly stiff. It has an original plug chain and waste. Areas of discolouration to skirt and couple of areas to the top. Minor hairlines
