Item Description
A pair of late 15th / early 16th century French oak panels carved with round masks surrounded by pattern decoration. The right hand panel appears to show partial text. Both are ready for hanging in an interior, fitted with a hooks to the reverse.
Over 520 years old, these age-old panels have withstood the test of time. They offer a glimpse into early 16th century Europe when Louis XII was ruler of France.
Once forming part of an old oak chest, these carved antique panels are evocative of the period, known for its simplistic carving styles into rich woods.
Included is a photograph and some French text to the reverse (pictured) which translated reads:
“From the beginning of the 16th century, alongside the ultramontane motifs, decorative elements appeared more specifically on chests, apparently naive, but which were in reality very clever esoteric or symbolic figures, often very difficult or poorly interpreted due to lack of documentation.”
