Item Description
A pair of handcarved mid 16th century renaissance style oak wall panels depicting portraits of noble people.
Each are of an expert quality after more than 450 years and well-carved for the period, other decorative pieces of the era often simpler and more naive.
The square wall panels both depict a bust of a male and female noble figures encircled by a laurel wreath to the centre of a scrolled cartouche with sprigs of fruit adorning the top corners. The figures face one another, perhaps once designed as part of a marriage panel.
The quality of these panels is certainly to be celebrated, the carving and colour having stood the test of time for almost four centuries. Together, they will look stunning on the walls of a period interior as well as a neutral, modern space alongside complementary dark wood furniture.
CONDITION REPORT
Good structural condition. Hooks to the back of each panel for hanging. Small losses, splits and historic repairs.
