Item Description

A pair of antique Grand Tour style framed watercolour paintings after Michelangelo’s the Hours of the Day and Night.

Both paintings depict angelic figures, one playing a tambourine, the other holding a basket on her head and a floral wand in her left hand, both on black backgrounds with complimenting pink borders.

Exceptionally presented in quality frames, both paintings are an ode to the history of Italian art, whether decorative or collector’s pieces they would make a beautiful addition to period and contemporary settings alike.

Michelangelo’s the Hours of Day & Night

The pair are after the series titled the ‘Hours of the Day and Night’ by historic Italian painter Michelangelo Maestri (1741-1812).

Mainly known for his body colours that he based on the wall frescos in Pompeii, drawings of subjects like in these paintings became very popular amongst travellers on their European Grand Tour.

This iconic series refers to the sculptures of ‘Day’ and ‘Night’, or Dawn and Dusk, that Michelangelo handcarved for the Medici Chapel in Florence. The pair depict two reclining figures of the sarcophagi of Giuliano and Lorenzo de Medici.

While the picture to the left is after the drawing ‘Allegory of a Dancing Maenad’ from the series.

Michelangelo drew inspiration from renaissance artists such as Giulio Romano (1499-1546) and Raphael Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520).
