Item Description
A plaster Italian sculpture of Eros of Centocelle after the antique set on tapering mahogany pedestal finished in a French polish.
Eros, the God of love, is depicted looking down to his right in an impressive scale with a beautiful time worn look.
The base of the plaster is impressed with '1378 TORSE ANTIQUE AMOUR DIT L'AMOUR GREC MUSE VATICAN’.
Dating to circa 1880, this striking plaster figure will make a handsome feature for an indoor space, looking particularly striking in a hallway or centre piece in a grand room.
If you’re looking to add prestige and mythological charm to your home, this bust is the perfect piece.
Eros di Centocelle
This super plaster sculpture is a copy of the remarkable original marble Eros di Centocelle, which was excavated in 1772 from Centocelle, on the Via Labicana, by the Scottish neoclassical painter and archaeologist Gavin Hamilton.
It was found without forearms, legs, genitals and its nose later reattached.
The limbless figure was thought to have originally had wings due to the holes found in its back, however they would have later been lost in excavation.
Although briefly housed in the Louvre, Paris, between 1797 and 1800, the original now resides in the Pius-Clementin Museum, Rome.
