Item Description
An early 19th century framed English School oil painting titled ‘The Monument’, depicting the Ailesbury Column, Savernake Forest, Wiltshire.
A defining feature of Savernake Forest since 1781, the limestone obelisk, topped with a scrolling capital below a decorative bronze urn, was erected by Thomas Bruce, Earl of Ailesbury. The Bruce family owned the estate from 1675 until 1946.
Painted in oils and backed onto timber board, the oil painting depicts the tall obelisk among the grounds of the estate. Deer graze in the landscape before Tottenham House in the distance, a large Grade I listed English country home. The painting is completed with a gilt inner edge in a further walnut veneered frame.
Over 220 years old, this oil painting is instilled with a sense of age and Georgian interest, reflecting the interior styles of the period. With its stately, English presence, it is a handsome addition to a period study, hallway or reception room.
