Item Description
Two late 19th century antique buff terracotta garden urns manufactured by Blanchard. These urns are over 130 years old and despite signs of wear and losses, remain a striking set for a garden, telling the story of 19th century English craftsmanship. The urns are of a matching form with a large scale with gadrooned bases and masks to the sides above a socle base.
Blanchard Terracotta
Blanchard was one of Britain's leading manufacturers of terracotta during the 19th century. Following an apprenticeship at the Coade factory, Mark Henry Blanchard established his own business in Blackfriar's Road, Lambeth in circa 1840. The firm specialised in statuary pieces, vases, busts and architectural details and even acquired important contracts including a commission from the Victoria and Albert Museum for architectural ornaments. At the Great Exhibition of 1851, Blanchard received a number of awards, inspiring none other than John Marriott Blashfield to set up a competing terracotta business.
