Item Description
A brass caster of a form shown in Randle Holme's Academy of Armory to be for dispensing 'Pepper.....a well-known spice of aromatic odour and an extremely pungent aromatic taste'. However, the holes are perhaps too large for pepper and therefore it is more likely a flour dredger, more often fashioned with straight sides and a loop handle. Whatever the intended purpose, this scale of utensil was made for use in a large country-house kitchen. English, probably Birmingham, circa 1750.
