We can find almost nothing about the sculptor of this fine, accomplished, bronze work, save that he seems to have been amongst a close group of friends of Jean Meissonier (1815-1891). In his 19th century biography by Octave Greard, Cerrien is always referred to as in the past and '..dear Cerrien, the remembrance of whom is so constantly in my mind......'. One wonders if this was a talent who died young; this work dated to the beginnings of the Animalier Movement and the work of Antoine-Louis Barye, around 1830.
